Vittor & Associates is conducting environmental surveys for the 5-year (2009-2013) mitigation monitoring program for the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) Choctaw Point Terminal project, in Mobile County. To fulfill wetland mitigation obligations stemming from ASPA port expansion, three created tidal marsh complexes are being monitored semi-annually for sediment organic content, vegetation density and composition, invasive species, macroinfauna, and fisheries use of the marshes and adjacent tidal creeks. Results are compared with criteria for mitigation success stipulated in the wetland permit and with concurrent surveys at a reference marsh at Deer River.
