Taxonomy Laboratory

Vittor & Associates currently employs six full-time taxonomists with a total of 60 years experience, and four full-time support staff with a total of 65 years experience. We are proficient in the identification of benthic macroinfauna from the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. We have additional experience with samples from the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Russia.

Our Taxonomy Laboratory processes between 2,000 - 3,000 benthic samples per year. We have analyzed more than 60,000 samples in the past 30 years.

Several of our senior taxonomists are nationally recognized experts in the identification of marine crustaceans and polychaetes. Vittor & Associates has published the seven-volume polychaete guide, Taxonomic Guide to the Polychaetes of the Northern Gulf of Mexico, that is acknowledged worldwide.

Wetland and Terrestrial Services

  • Wetland Mitigation Design, Monitoring and Maintenance
  • Wetlands Delineation
  • Wetlands Permitting
  • Wetlands Reconnaissance
  • Wetlands Restoration and Creation
  • Habitat Evaluation/Assessment
  • Threatened/Endangered Species Surveys

Vittor & Associates has considerable experience in coastal and inland wetland and terrestrial ecosystem studies. We routinely perform surveys of jurisdictional wetland boundaries. Our wetland mitigation experience includes habitat evaluation surveys, site selection, project design, excavation management, plant species collection, nurserying, vegetation planting, and monitoring. Other biological surveys performed by Vittor & Associates have included rare and endangered species assessments, non-wetland vegetation, wildlife, and aquatic biota.

Vittor & Associates has been on the forefront of developing and implementing stream rapid bioassessment techniques for macroinvertebrates. We have developed and conducted stream rapid bioassessments in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi and Georgia. We have also utilized lake rapid bioassessments for macroinvertebrates and developed management plans for small lakes.

Vittor & Associates' has conducted mussel surveys in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and New York for pipeline development and transportation projects, stream and riverine surveys for threatened/endangered mussels and gastropods, long-term monitoring studies and provided expert testimony on the ecology of freshwater mollusks.
